How to Prepare for Your Tattoo Session
Proper preparation ensures a smooth and enjoyable tattooing experience. Here are some tips:

1. Care for your skin:
• Moisturize your skin for a few days leading up to the session to keep it soft and elastic.
• Avoid tanning, burns, or skin injuries in the area where the tattoo will be.

2. Rest and eat:
• Get a good night’s sleep beforehand and eat 1–2 hours before the session to avoid feeling faint or weak.

3. Avoid alcohol and certain medications:
• Refrain from drinking alcohol or taking blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin or ibuprofen) for 24 hours before the session.

4. Wear comfortable clothing:
• Choose clothing that easily exposes the area to be tattooed and that you don’t mind getting stained.

5. Bring essentials:
• Water or a light snack, especially for longer sessions.
• Headphones or a book to help pass the time.

Proper preparation will help you feel more comfortable and make the process easier for both you and your artist.

How to Care for Your Tattoo
1. Leave the wrap or bandage on for a few hours:
After the session, your tattoo artist may apply a special wrap or bandage to protect the tattoo from bacteria and dirt. Keep it on for 2–4 hours, as instructed.

2. Wash your tattoo gently:
After removing the wrap, clean the tattoo with mild antibacterial soap and warm water. Be gentle—avoid rough towels or sponges.

3. Apply healing cream:
Use tattoo-specific creams that are alcohol- and fragrance-free. In the Netherlands, popular options include Bepanthen or Hustle Butter, which hydrate the skin and promote healing.

4. Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds:
Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds for the first few weeks. This is especially important during the Dutch summer when the sun can be intense.

5. Don’t scratch your tattoo:
Your tattoo may itch as it heals, but resist the urge to touch it. Scratching can cause infections or damage the design.

6. Avoid hot water:
Stay away from hot baths, saunas, or swimming pools for the first 2 weeks. This prevents infections and helps the skin heal properly.

7. Choose the right clothing:
Wear loose, breathable clothing to avoid irritating the tattoo during the healing process.

8. Limit plastic wrap use:
Unless advised otherwise, don’t wear plastic wrap for extended periods, as your skin needs to breathe.

9. Keep your hands clean:
Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo to avoid introducing bacteria.

10. Be patient:
Tattoos take about 2–3 weeks to heal on the surface, with complete healing taking up to 6 weeks. Follow your care routine to preserve the vibrancy and quality of your tattoo.By following these steps, you’ll ensure proper healing and long-lasting results for your tattoo.
